Collaborative Opportunities to Advance Community Health (COACH) and its trauma-informed, healing-centered practice (TIHCP) advisors provided active support in designing the event titled Health Literacy Month Event: Health Literacy Through the Lens of Trauma-Informed Healing held on October 17th from 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM ET. The following quotes encapsulate some of the many insightful takeaways from our event’s discussions:

  • “Every interaction is an intervention.” – Dr. Karen Treisman, quoted by Dr. Jeanne Felter
  • “When we’re only helping people tell the story of their trauma, we’re only having them tell half the story. The other half is the story of survival and strength and resilience.” – Dr. Meagan Corrado
  • “It’s more than a list of dos and don’ts. It’s about reframing how you interact with people… Universal approach of safety!” – Gwen Soffer
  • “We need to make resilience for healthcare worker more about how you recover and not how you endure.” – Dr. Dena Hubbard

Thank you to all who participated, shared personal experiences, and helped create a safe space for discussing these crucial topics. You can find the session recordings from this meaningful event through the link below!

Several COACH members presented in keynote address and panel discussions at Pennsylvania Health Literacy Coalition (PAHLC) spring virtual event titled Screening without Stigma: Health Literate Ways to Ask Hard Questions in 2023!

For those who could not make it to this event, we’d love to share some quotes and critical messaging that came from the conversations:

“We need to approach these conversations with humility, respect, and compassion.” – U. Tara Hayden

“My concern about the use of the word ‘screening’ is that its use risks turning the activity into a laundry list of questions that forces us not to engage in a patient-centered way.” – Heather Klusaritz, Panel Discussion

Before health care professionals can administer any care, they must gather information to assess each patient properly. While preliminary physical or psychological health screenings are essential, often, there are underlying issues that aren’t easily identified. We want to continue to grow and learn with you to continue your work with a health literate lens. Thank you to all of our attendees and speakers!
